Panthers Swept by Notre Dame

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team was swept by Notre Dame Friday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers [14-7, 5-4 ACC] fell in straight sets to the Irish [15-6, 8-1 ACC] 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21 respectively.
Statistically, Pitt tallied more kills (42/25), assists (41/35) and digs (44/40) than Notre Dame but were unable to get ahead of the Irish throughout the sets.
Pitt was led on offense by redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams. Williams tallied 15 kills, while junior Mariah Bell finished the match with 12 and .273 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Kamalani Akeo put up 36 assists against Notre Dame and redshirt sophomore Angela Seman led the team with 12 digs. Redshirt senior Jenna Potts performed strong at the net as she finished with six blocks, including two solo.

The Panthers dropped the opening set to the Irish 25-19, as they fell behind early on and were unable to catch their opponent.

The two teams opened with back-and-forth points but Notre Dame took the first substantial lead as they pushed ahead by five, 12-7. Pitt tried to work its way back into the set but the Irish continued to add points and extended their lead to 18-13. The Panthers were unable to stop Notre Dame who went on to win the set.
Set Two: Pitt 20, Notre Dame 25
Pitt fell behind 2-0 in the match after losing the second set to the Irish, 25-20.
After taking a 6-4 lead early on, the Panthers gave up three straight points to give Notre Dame a 7-6 lead.
The score remained close midway throughout the set as Pitt trailed by just two points, 16-14. However, the Irish pulled away at the conclusion of the set which the Panthers were unable able to fight off.
Set Three: Pitt 21, Notre Dame 25
The third set was a battle to the end, which Notre Dame won 25-21 thanks to a four-point run at the end of the set that separated the Irish from Pitt.
The Panthers came out firing in set three taking a 10-7 lead but Notre Dame came back and tied the set 16-16. From there the Irish outscored Pitt 5-1 to extend their lead to 21-17.
The Panthers called a timeout but it wasn't enough as Notre Dame earned set point. Pitt fought off three Irish set points but the Panthers' comeback attempt fell short.
