WHAT'S ON THE LINE
Runners who place in the top 40 will earn All-America honors. Maureen McCandless is the only Pitt cross country runner in program history to achieve this status, doing so in 2004.
PITT'S HISTORY AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Only one student-athlete from the University of Pittsburgh has competed at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships: Maureen McCandless of Bensalem, Pa. On Nov. 25, 2002, she finished 210th with a time of 22:10.1 in Terre Haute, Ind. In 2004, McCandless won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional (20:26) in Lewisburg, Pa., and went on to place fifth while claiming All-America status at the NCAA Championships with a time of 20:38 in Terre Haute, Ind.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions. For a complete list of qualifiers, visit USTFCCCA.org.
LAST TIME OUT - NCAA MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL (NOV. 11)
Schriever qualified for the NCAA National Championship meet with a fifth-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Blue & White Course in University Park, Pa., Friday. The Tuckerton, N.J., native finished with a time of 20:30 in the 6K race, becoming the second Pitt cross country student-athlete ever to qualify for the national meet, and the first since Maureen McCandless in 2004.
CROSS COUNTRY TOWN USA (TERRE HAUTE, IND.)
Indiana State University has hosted both the Pre-National Invitational and the Division I NCAA Cross Country Championships a total of 11 times at Terre Haute's prestigious LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center since the 2002 season. In women's competition, no school has hosted the national meet more times than Indiana State since the women's national title race was instituted in 1981 (when it was run in Wichita, Kan.). After hosting six straight seasons, the city of Terre Haute was officially given the nickname of Cross Country Town USA in 2009 for its efforts. The city, in conjunction with the University, went on to host four more national championships in 2010-11 and 2013-14, with both the Pre-Nationals and NCAA Championships returning for the 2016 season.
LOOKING AHEAD
The National Championships mark the end of cross country season. Pitt will move indoors for track and field season, which begins with the Blue-Gold Meet, set for Dec. 2-3 in Pittsburgh.
