RESULTS
TERRE HAUTE, IND. - In her NCAA Cross Country Championship debut, University of Pittsburgh sophomore Gillian Schriever made the second-best finish by a Panther at the final in program history, placing 106th at 20:52.1 Saturday morning at LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course.
"Although I felt Gillian did a wonderful job representing Pitt in her first National Championship experience, she went there with All-American expectations," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "She fell a little short of that goal but the experience she gained has been invaluable for the future. All year with the help of a few others she has been the standard bearer for the women's distance program and I'm so proud and happy for her."
Schriever's finish is second only to Maureen McCandless' 2004 All-American placement of fifth at 20:38 on the same course. Schriever was the first Panther to compete at the National Championship since McCandless, and is the second qualifier in school history.
"Gillian is showing that Pitt distance is on the rise and that special things are happening here," Webb said. "She is the essence of a Pitt track and field/cross country student-athlete: intelligent, humble and hardworking. Congratulations to her for a job well done. For a young lady who just over a year ago came here just looking to try out for the team, I think it's pretty incredible to find herself competing in the national championships."
AT THE FINISH LINE
Missouri's Karissa Schweizer overtook Michigan's Erin Finn and ACC Champion Anna Rohrer of Notre Dame in the final stretch to claim the women's individual title at 19:41.6.
Oregon won its second team title in the last five years, scoring 125 points. Michigan and Colorado followed with 126 and 134, respectively.
COACH'S CORNER
"Today Gillian went out there and gave it everything she had, like she always does," Pitt women's distance coach Adam Bray "Her goal was to finish as an All-American and she was running in that position for most of the race. Unfortunately she came up a little short but the experience that she gained from this meet will make her that much better in the future. We couldn't be more proud of Gillian. She has accomplished so much in her short time here at Pitt and I am looking forward to watching her race on the track."
LOOKING AHEAD
The National Championships mark the end of cross country season. Pitt will move indoors for track and field season, which begins with the Blue-Gold Meet, set for Dec. 2-3 in Pittsburgh.
