PITTSBURGH— Pitt volleyball players Kamalani Akeo and Nika Markovic swept this week's ACC volleyball honors after leading the Panthers to a pair of road victories over Syracuse and Boston College.
Akeo, the Panthers setter, was named ACC Player of the week, while Markovic earned ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
Their strong performances helped Pitt top the Orange in four sets and Eagles in three as they continue to push for an NCAA Tournament berth. The Panthers have won eight of their past nine games.
Akeo, the sophomore setter, has been the backbone to Pitt's offense all year. On the weekend, she registered 12.43 assists per set, along with 2.14 digs per set. She tallied 87 assists and 15 digs in the two games combined.
Against Syracuse, Akeo earned 51 assists, a match Pitt hit .229 in. In the three-set victory over Boston College, she had 36 assists and aided the Panthers to a .412 hitting percentage. The mark was Pitt's second-highest hitting percentage in an ACC match this year.
Markovic, a freshman right-side hitter, was recognized for the second time this season as she was also named a recipient on Oct. 31 after a pair of wins over North Carolina and N.C. State.
Since returning from injury, Markovic has been a key component to Pitt's offense and hit .324 over the weekend with 30 kills. She also added 23 digs and five blocks.
In the win over the Orange, Markovic had 15 kills and finished with a .250 hitting percentage. She also registered 17 digs and three blocks. Against the Eagles, the Braslovce, Slovenia, native tallied another 15 kills and hit .433. Markovic committed just two errors in 30 attempts, while also producing six digs and two blocks.
The Panthers will take on Virginia Tech at home Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. before closing out the season at Virginia Nov. 27 at 5 p.m.
