
Pitt Wins Second Meeting with Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team swept Clemson for the second time this season, Friday evening at Jervey Gym in Clemson, S.C.
The Panthers [18-7, 9-4 ACC] defeated the Tigers [6-18, 1-11 ACC] in the opening set 25-15. Pitt earned 25-20 victories in the final two sets to earn the sweep.
The Panthers offense finished strong with a .351 clip, including a .517 showing in the first set. Pitt finished the match with more kills (48/30), assists (44/28) and digs (39/20). The Panthers defense held the Tigers to a .144 hitting percentage.
Freshman Nika Markovic and redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams each recorded 14 kills in the match to lead Pitt, while junior Kelsey O'Neill and redshirt senior Jenna Potts both posted eight apiece. Markovic finished the match with a .393 hitting percentage, while Williams hit .333.
Controlling the offense was sophomore Kamalani Akeo with 41 assists. Redshirt sophomore Angela Seman led Pitt in digs with nine, while Markovic also tallied five blocks to lead the Panthers.
Set One: Pitt 25, Clemson 15
The Panthers opened the first set against the Tigers with a dominating 25-15 win. Pitt started the set with four straight points, the first three coming from Potts, Markovic and Williams who roped off consecutive kills.
Clemson came back within one, 7-6 but a four-point run by the Panthers put Pitt ahead 11-6. The Panthers continued to separate themselves from the Tigers, leading 17-10 midway through the set.
Clemson called a timeout but was unable to stop Pitt who rattled off five of its last eight points by way of kills.
Markovic led all Panthers with six kills, but Pitt showed off an even attack as five Panthers recorded kills in the set.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Clemson 20
Pitt earned a 2-0 lead in the match after picking up a second set, 25-20 victory.
Trailing 8-6 early on, Pitt outscored Clemson 7-2 to take a 13-9 lead. The Tigers stuck around but the Panthers remained out in front through the midpoint of the set.
Clemson called a timeout following three straight Pitt points which gave the Panthers a 17-12 lead, but the Tigers got back in the game and trailed by two points 20-18. Turning the tables, Pitt was forced to call for its first timeout of the match.
Pitt returned from the break to go on a short three-point run, which included two kills by Potts and a single by Williams. Clemson took its second timeout as the Panthers led 23-18 but Pitt earned set point and went on to win the set and take a 2-0 lead.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Clemson 20
The Panthers wrapped up the win in the third set, defeating Clemson 25-20.
Pitt got out to a quick lead, pushing ahead 9-5. However Clemson's defense, along with Panther errors brought the Tigers within one, 13-12.
Pitt called a timeout to regroup and returned from the break to score back-to-back points and pull ahead 15-13.
The Panthers separated themselves from the Tigers late in the set, leading by six 22-16. Pitt earned match point 24-17, but the Tigers fought off three points before the Panthers earned the win.

Pitt will take on Georgia Tech, Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in its second matchup with the Yellow Jackets this season.
