EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt junior Nick Zanetta earned an eighth place finish Friday afternoon at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Northwestern's campus.
Zanetta, unseeded at 141 pounds, was the lone Panther to advance to Friday's session and earn a spot on the podium. He became the 28th top-8 finisher by a Pitt wrestler at the Midlands Championships.
"It was great to see Nick compete hard with some of the top competition in the country and be able to get on the podium," head coach Jason Peters said. "I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do the second half of the season."
In his first match of the day, Zanetta defeated the No. 13 seed Jack Hathaway of Oregon State, 6-2. After a scoreless first period, Zanetta got on the board first after escaping off bottom and carried his lead into the third. Hathaway started the third in the down position and escaped to tie it 1-1. With the end of the third closing in, Zanetta put together two takedowns to secure his first victory.
Moving to the consolation quarterfinals, Zanetta faced Kenan Storr of Iowa State who was wrestling unattached. After another scoreless first period, Zanetta started on bottom entering the second period and quickly escaped. He then started on top heading to the third with a 1-0 lead. Storr escaped just a few seconds into the period, but that would be the final point of regulation as the two went to overtime, 1-1. In sudden victory, Storr took down Zanetta to secure the win.
Looking to capture seventh place, Zanetta clashed with the No. 7 seed, Chris Carton of Iowa. Carton struck first with a takedown early on in the opening frame, however Zanetta quickly escaped with 1:23 to go in the first. Carton tacked on another escape after starting in the down position to open the second period. Trailing 3-1 entering the third, Zanetta started on bottom but wouldn't be able to get out. Carton added one more point with riding time, taking seventh place in a 4-1 decision.
The Pittsburgh product finished the tournament 5-3 and improves to 10-7 overall and 9-5 in tournaments this season.
The Panthers resume action Saturday, Jan. 14 for the annual Pitt Duals. Pitt will face Franklin & Marshall, Davidson and Bloomsburg. The duals are set to get underway at 9 a.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
