PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Gillian Schriever and Ryan Lewis were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Schriever, a sophomore from Tuckerton, N.J., posted the first individual win of her Pitt cross country career when she crossed the finish line at the 48th annual Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron, Ohio, Friday. Since the event was the first collegiate meet on the dedicated cross-country only course at the Silver Creek Metro Park, Schriever’s time of 17:53.3 counts as a course record.
Lewis joined a long list of Pitt players to make unforgettable plays in the historic Penn State series Saturday. With the Nittany Lions threatening at the Pitt 31 with 1:15 to play, Lewis intercepted a Trace McSorley pass in the end zone, ending both the drive and the game. In addition to his first career pick, the Seattle, Wash., native added a game-high nine tackles, all solo.
Pitt’s women’s cross country squad will compete next at the St. Vincent Invitational in Latrobe, Pa., Saturday at 10:45 a.m. ET.
Next for the football team is a road trip to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. The game will be televised by ESPN.
