PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Kamalani Akeo, Melanie Vlasic and Aaron Sett were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Akeo, a junior setter, helped the Pitt volleyball team (13-4, 6-0) extend its impressive win streak to 10 matches with 3-1 victories at Florida State (Oct. 6) and Miami (Oct. 8). The Kapolei, Hawaii, native was instrumental in the Panthers' attack, producing 13.0 assists per set. Pitt's 10-match streak is the Panthers' longest since winning 12 consecutive matches during the 2003 season, en route to the team's Big East Championship.
Vlasic, a senior, picked up an individual win in the women's cross country 5K in her final race at Schenley Park Saturday morning. The Hatfield, Pa., native led the way for Pitt at the CMU Invitational with a time of 18:26.2, marking the second win of her college cross country career and her first since the UB Stampede Invitational on Sept. 12, 2015.
Sett led the way for the Pitt men's swimming & diving team with two event victories as the Panthers opened the 2017-18 season with a dual at Georgia Tech Friday. The junior freestyle distance swimmer dominated his two primary events—the 500 free and 1000 free—in scoring maximum team points. He triumphed in the 500 free with a time of 4:33.46 and took the 1000 free with a mark of 9:15.92 against the Yellow Jackets. He also placed third in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.63, finishing with 21 total team points scored for Pitt.
Pitt volleyball will remain on the road as the squad heads to Syracuse and Boston College. The Panthers take on the Orange Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m.
Both the men's and women's cross country squads will compete at the Pre-National Invitational hosted by the University of Louisville Saturday at 10 a.m.
Pitt swimming and diving will return to action in two weeks at home when they welcome Virginia and LSU to Trees Pool for a two-day meet on Friday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 21. Friday's action will begin at 4 p.m. before Saturday's competition commences at 10 a.m. against the Cavaliers of the ACC and the Tigers of the SEC in an exciting tri-meet.
