PITTSBURGH—Pitt sophomore swimmer Samy Helmbacher has been named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Helmbacher, a native of Rosheim, France, had an incredible meet for the Panthers against No. 22 Virginia and LSU over the weekend at Trees Pool, winning both individual medley events, posting two NCAA B-cut times and setting two personal records.
The versatile Pitt sophomore opened the two-day meet with a strong performance on Friday to triumph in the 400-yard IM, touching the wall in an NCAA B-cut time of 3:49.83.
On Saturday, Helmbacher was even more dominant in the 200-yard IM, beating the best the Cavaliers and Tigers had to offer by nearly three seconds to win the event with a personal-record time of 1:47.52, which was also another NCAA B-cut mark.
Helmacher also contributed a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with another personal record, completing the event in 2:02.48.
His two victories and another top-five finish helped lift the Panthers to an impressive 203-150 dual win as a team over the LSU Tigers of the Southeastern Conference, which helped propel the Pitt men's team into a No. 13 ranking in this week's CollegeSwimming.com poll.
As one of 43 underclassmen competing for the Panthers this season, Helmbacher will once again lead the Pitt youth movement in another home meet this weekend.
The Pitt swimming & diving teams will welcome ACC rival Miami, Big Ten opponent Michigan State and James Madison of the CAA to Trees Pool on Friday, Oct. 27 for a 4 p.m. meet.
