PITTSBURGH—The Pitt swimming & diving teams are set for their marquee invitational meet of the fall at this weekend's 12th annual Ohio State Invitational in Columbus.
The Panthers will suit up in their championship racing gear this weekend's prestigious meet, which begins with preliminary events on Friday at 11 a.m. and continues on Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. each day. The finals in each event will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Pitt will compete against host Ohio State, NC State, Notre Dame, Penn State, West Virginia, Kentucky, Washington State, Yale, Florida Gulf Coast, Marshall and Kenyon over the weekend, giving the Panthers an opportunity to test themselves versus some of the nation's top teams from various conferences.
While there will be no head-to-head team scores calculated, the Ohio State Invitational provides the Pitt men (5-2, 0-2 ACC) and women (8-2, 1-2 ACC) with an opportunity to challenge themselves in a championship-style meet aimed at preparing the Panthers for the all-important ACC and NCAA Championships later this season.
Leading the Pitt men's team, swimmers Brian Lovasik, Aaron Sett, Samy Helmbacher, Brian Lovasik and Eben Vorster will look to continue their strong starts to the season, while diver Joe Ference hopes to build on his impressive victories last time out at Rutgers with another successful meet.
For the Pitt women's program, senior swimmers Amanda Richey and Lina Rathsack return to the Ohio State Invitational, where both recorded some of the best times in Pitt history in their respective freestyle distance and breaststroke events. Senior diver Meme Sharp also looks to provide a veteran presence by contending for titles, while the Panthers' youth movement continues to shine in the form of Valerie Daigneault, Sarah Giamber and several others.
