Redshirt Sophomore Leads Volleyball to Weekend Sweep, Sophomore Swimmer Breaks Records
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Stephanie Williams and Samy Helmbacher were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Williams, a redshirt sophomore, had an outstanding weekend for Pitt volleyball (23-6, 16-2 ACC), as she led the Panthers to back-to-back sweeps of Clemson and Georgia Tech. The Eastlake, Ohio, native was phenomenal offensively, tallying 4.67 kills per set after putting away 28 kills. The sophomore hit at a .462 clip on the weekend after committing just four errors in 52 total attempts. At the service line, Williams finished with seven aces, 1.17 per set, while also tallying eight digs and two blocks.
Helmbacher, a sophomore, broke both Pitt swimming school records in the individual medley over the weekend at the Ohio State Invitational, placing third in the 200 IM with a Pitt all-time best of 1:45.76 and taking third in the 400 IM with another Pitt record of 3:45.80. Both times were easily NCAA B cuts. Helmbacher also recorded an NCAA B cut in the 200 breast in finishing 11th with a time of 1:59.61.
Pitt volleyball will close out its regular season this weekend with matches at Virginia Tech and Virginia. The Panthers will visit the Hokies in Blacksburgh, Va., at 4 p.m. Friday and face the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va., Sunday at 4 p.m.
Next up for swimming and diving: some Panthers will return to Columbus in two weeks for the USA Swimming Winter Nationals Wednesday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Dec. 2.
