
Three Panthers Earn Second Swims at USA Winter Nationals

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Three Panthers advanced to the finals of the USA Swimming Winter Nationals on Thursday evening at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, with Pitt senior Lina Rathsack leading the way by qualifying for the championship final in the women's 200-yard individual medley.
Rathsack's seventh-place finish in 200 IM with a time of 1:58.39 was the highlight of Pitt's first day competing at the meet, which features some of the best talent from around the country.
Also earning second swims for the Panthers on Thursday were sophomores Valerie Daigneault and Luke Smutny. Daigneault placed 14th in the 200 IM after a strong B Final performance of 2:01.19, while Smutny took 20th in the 500-yard freestyle thanks to his C Final effort of 4:28.16.
Pitt freshman Ryan Schonbachler also competed Thursday, taking 33rd in the 500 free in 4:35.86.
Friday will see Rathsack and Smutny open up in the 100-yard fly races, while Smutny will have a quick turnaround before racing in the 200-yard free. Following that, Rathsack and sophomore Brian Ramsey enter the 100-yard breaststroke preliminary heats before Daigneault and freshman Shahar Menahem compete in the 100-yard backstroke.
