"We started a bit sluggish today but rallied and compete well to finish the meet," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "We're always happy to win duals as a team like we did this weekend, especially by winning so many events. Now we'll get home and rest up for the Ohio State Invitational in a few weeks."
Coach Hargis also highlighted the individual performances of Armin Remenyi and Sarah Giamber this weekend. Remenyi, who represented Hungary at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, continued his strong start to his freshman season by winning the 1,000 free on Friday before turning around on Saturday and winning two sprinting events, the 100 free and 100 fly. Giamber, a sophomore, bested her personal record by three seconds in the 200 IM on Friday and triumphed in Saturday's 400 IM.
"Armin and Sarah had phenomenal meets," Hargis added. "It was great to see them swim at the level at which they did. Armin is just freakishly talented. There's a reason he was an Olympian. He loves to race. We could put him in any event, and he'll go and compete. He's just a special talent."
Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton was also pleased with the performances of her five Panthers in action this weekend at Rutgers.
"There were a lot of good things in diving this weekend," Hazelton said. "Joe Ference won both the men's 1-meter and 3-meter competitions with really solid scoring. Meme Sharp executed well in both women's events as well. They're both showing tremendous improvement and consistency. We'll keep working hard in practice over the next couple weeks as we continue to progress."
Ference was one of six Pitt athletes to win multiple events this weekend. Remenyi took his three titles, along with sophomore swimmer Valerie Daigneault on the women's side in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM. Winning a pair of races were also sophomore Samy Helmbacher (200 IM, 400 IM), freshman Bence Szucsik (100 back, 200 back) and senior Lina Rathsack (100 breast, 200 breast) for the Panthers.
The Panthers are off next weekend before the Pitt swimming & diving teams head to the Ohio State Invitational from Friday, Nov. 17 to Sunday, Nov. 19 in Columbus for one of nation's most competitive fall meets.
