Gymnast Recognized for Efforts in the Community
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh gymnast Taylor Laymon was named September's PNC Beyond the Game Honoree.
The award, which recognizes one student-athlete per month during the college football season through November, focuses on their efforts outside of their respective sport and in the community.
Laymon is heavily involved in Pitt's Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program, which is dedicated to engaging student-athletes in experiences that involve the University, local, and national communities through service.
In the last year, Laymon has spent over 55 hours volunteering locally and internationally. Most notably, the senior was one of multiple student-athletes that traveled to Haiti for a mission trip organized by the school's Coalition of Christian Outreach this past May.
The group journeyed to Cap Haitien, a city of about 200,000 on the North Coast of the country. Upon arrival, they worked at several different locations, including the EBAC Orphanage and School, the New Vision Children's Home, IDADEE Orphanage and New Hope Hospital. The trip marked the third time Laymon has gone to Haiti.
The Pitt gymnastics team also participates in the Friends of Jaclyn program, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers and to raise awareness through their Adopt-A-Child, Safe on the Sidelines and Guardian Angel Programs.
In 2016, the squad, including Laymon, adopted four-year-old Mina Deluca, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in 2014. Deluca attends multiple meets throughout the season and spends time with the team on occasion.
Additionally, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native volunteered her time at the USA Gymnastics Fitness Zone hosted by P&G Championships and United Way's Project RUN.
