Sophomore Leads Pitt to 3-0 Weekend, Junior Paces Panthers in Team Win
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Layne Van Buskirk and Ryan Hughes were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
In a 3-0 weekend for Pitt volleyball, Van Buskirk hit at a .711 clip after registering 28 kills in 28 attempts. The sophomore middle blocker committed just one hitting error through three matches, while producing 3.11 kills per set. She also racked up five blocks on the weekend.
Hughes led the Pitt men's cross country team to its first team win of the season at the UB Stampede Invitational Friday in Amherst, N.Y. The Ashburn, Va., native paced the Panthers by placing second overall with a personal best 8K time of 24:43.6. He was one of six from Pitt to place in the top 15 of the race.
The Panthers' volleyball team will open ACC play against Syracuse at Fitzgerald Field House Friday at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
Pitt men's and women's cross country will be in action at the Notre Dame/Joe Piane Invitational Friday, Sept. 29, in Notre Dame, Ind.
