Pitt Turns Attention to Virginia Tech
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Youngstown State Wednesday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field.
Pitt (6-9, 0-3 ACC) succumbed to an early deficit, as the Panthers closed out the second game of a six-game homestand.
"When you look at what they [Youngstown State] were able to accomplish with two outs and two strikes, they were able to put the ball in play and find timely hitting, and that was the difference in the ballgame" said head coach Mike Bell. "It doesn't always take a double or a home run to score a run, sometimes it's just a line drive or a walk and handing it to the next guy. You have to tip your cap to Youngstown, they're a team that has been tested. They've been on the road at Mississippi State and on the road at Florida State. They've competed against Miami [Ohio], which is a very good baseball team. They came in here very battle tested, they didn't make any errors themselves, they threw the ball over the plate and they got a victory today."
Youngstown State got out to a quick lead, scoring three in the second to secure the advantage. The Penguins would add another in the third, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers would chip away at that advantage in the sixth, as a two-out, bases loaded single off the bat of Nico Popa plated the first Pitt runner of the afternoon.
Pitt would pull within two in the eighth. David Yanni led off the inning with a full-count walk, taking second on a walk to Popa. A single into right off the bat of Sky Duff loaded things up before a ground ball allowed Yanni to score.
The Panthers would threaten again in the ninth, putting a pair on with two outs, but weren't able to complete the comeback.
Popa led the offensive charge, going 2-3 with an RBI. Pitt managed seven hits on the afternoon, but stranded 11 runners in the defeat. Sophomore Ron Washington Jr. saw his 12-game hit streak come to an end, reaching base three times on a fielder's choice, walk and hit by pitch to extend his reached base streak to 13 games.
Sophomore Chris Cappas (0-3) made his fourth start of the season, going 2.0 innings, allowing three runs off one walk and four hits, striking out one. Derek West tossed 2.2 innings of relief, letting up one run off two hits and four walks, whiffing two. Senior William Kirwan was strong in relief, holding the Penguins to just one hit in 1.1 innings, walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Chase Smith closed it out, letting up two hits and one walk, fanning one in the final 3.0 frames.
The Panthers remain home this weekend, hosting Virginia Tech in a three-game series at Charles L. Cost Field. Pitt and the Hokies will get things started Friday at 3 p.m.
