Perry Homers Twice in Series Opening Loss
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in the opening game of a weekend series with Virginia, dropping Friday afternoon's contest by a score of 13-3 at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
The Panthers were able to get on the board early, plating a run in the opening frame as Connor Perry sent a solo shot into left field.
The Cavaliers would take the advantage after a three-run third inning, securing a 3-1 lead. Perry's second homer of the day would cut the lead to one, but Virginia would put up four in the bottom of the fifth to add to its lead.
Pitt's final run came in the sixth as a double off the bat of Nico Popa plated Ron Washington Jr., who had led off the inning with a single.
A pair of runs in the sixth and four in the eighth would put the lead at a 10-run advantage for the Cavaliers, as Pitt dropped the opening game of the series.
Starter Christian Camacho (1-2) went 2.2 innings, allowing three runs off three hits and two walks, striking out one. Freshman Billy Corcoran was solid in his 1.1 inning of work, striking out a pair. Brady Devereux, Chase Smith, William Kirwan, Mason Ronan and Chis Gomez all saw work out of the pen for the Panthers.
Perry's two-homer performance led the way for the Panther offense, the first time since March 6, 2018 that a Pitt batter tallied multiple home runs in a game. Popa went 2-4 with an RBI, as Pitt tallied eight hits on the afternoon.
The Panthers and Cavaliers will return to the field for game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
