Pitt Drops Regular Season Finale to No. 22 Wake Forest

Panthers Enter Postseason Wednesday, April 17 at the ACC Championships
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision in its final regular season match in program history to No. 22 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
With the loss, Pitt finishes the regular season 4-17 overall and 0-14 against ACC opponents. The Demon Deacons improve to 19-7 and 9-5 in conference play.
"Clara [Lucas] and Camila [Moreno] played spectacular doubles and we were one point away of being on serve on court two," said head coach Alex Santos. "In singles, we competed toe-to-toe against one of the best teams in the country. Once again, these girls demonstrated tremendous fight and character."
Wake Forest got the early advantage in the match, clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The Pitt doubles team of senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno captured a 6-3 win on court three, but it wouldn't be enough.
In singles, the Panthers were tied with Wake Forest, 1-1, after senior Natsumi Okamoto's opponent retired on court five. Okamoto had won the first set, 6-2, prior to collecting the win.
Soon after, senior Gabriela Rezende fell in straight sets, 0-6, 3-6, to Eliza Omirou on court three to give Wake Forest a 2-1 lead.
The Demon Deacons collected two more wins on courts three and six to secure the team victory.
Pitt enters postseason Wednesday, April 14 at the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C.
