Pitt Drops 10-9 Contest in Durham
The Panthers scored three in the ninth to tie things up, forcing extra innings, but a Duke single would push the Blue Devils to victory.
Pitt struck first in the third, plating a pair to jump out to the early lead. With the bases loaded, a pitch off the leg of Kyle Hess would bring the first man around before a fielder's choice and an error in the field allowed the Panthers to take a 2-0 lead.
Duke took its first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring three for a one-run advantage.
The Panthers responded in the top of the fifth, putting up a three-spot to regain the lead. David Yanni got things going with a one-out double down the left field line, as Cole MacLaren followed with a full-count walk. After Duke tallied the second out, a single from Sky Duff singled to left field, scoring Yanni. Bryce O'Farrell would follow with a two-run double to left center, giving the Panthers the 5-3 lead.
Duke again fought back, scoring four in the bottom of the frame to take a two-run advantage.
Pitt began to chip away at the lead in the eighth as a double from Hess cut the deficit to one, but Duke would respond with two more runs to secure its largest lead of the game.
The ninth inning saw some heroics from the Pitt offense, as a solo homer from MacLaren, the first of his career, got things going. Fellow Canadian O'Farrell would launch a two-run bomb into left field, his second of the season, tying things up.
A single put the go ahead run on for the Blue Devils, as the sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position. An infield single put the runner on third before a single through the right side gave Duke the win.
Offensively, O'Farrell's four RBI led the way, as he wrapped up the contest going 3-5 with two runs and a walk. Both Duff and Yanni tallied a pair of hits as the Panthers managed 12 on the afternoon.
Christian Camacho got the start, throwing 1.2 strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Chris Gomez would toss 2.1 frames of relief, letting up three runs off two hits and three walks, whiffing one. David Moore, William Kirwan and Chris Cappas also saw time out of the pen, as Chase Smith (1-4) threw the final two frames, allowing one run off five hits.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday, traveling to rival Penn State for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
