Pitt Sweeps Two-Game Series from UMES
Pitt (16-28, 4-17 ACC) used 21 hits to tally 26 runs, the team's best run output since scoring 36 against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in 1953. Thirteen different batters collected at least one hit, as Pitt grabbed the 24-run victory.
"This is the best time of year for college baseball," said head coach Mike Bell. "Our guys have continued to bring out the energy, they've put in the work, and they are starting to reap the rewards of what they've put in. Today was about our offensive approach. We continued to get the big hits with two outs, but up and down the lineup we saw a lot of balls hit hard. We saw guys running hard, ninety feet, playing the game the way it is meant to be played. Mason [Ronan] got us off to a good start. Again, defense was very solid, but today was all about the offense. It was going to be an offensive day the way the wind was blowing and our guys did a great job in putting together quality at bats."
The Panthers' offense picked up right where they left off in game one, scoring four in the opening frame to secure an early advantage. A full-count walk to Cole MacLaren would put on the first runner of the game as Connor Perry was able to reach after a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A single to center field from Nico Popa would load the bases before David Yanni would belt a grand slam into right center. The grand slam was the first for a Panther batter since Frank Maldonado tallied one at Notre Dame on May 5, 2018.
Pitt continued to add on in the second, scoring four more to jump out to an 8-0 lead. MacLaren took first after being hit by the second pitch of the inning, moving to second on a single from Perry. A single from Popa loaded things up, as Yanni drew a walk to bring home MacLaren and force a pitching change.
A single from Bryce O'Farrell scored Perry before a sacrifice fly from Kyle Hess plated Popa and recorded the first out of the inning. A wild pitch put both O'Farrell and Yanni in scoring position as a ground out allowed Yanni to score and gave Pitt an eight-run lead.
Maryland Eastern Shore would score its first run of the series in the third, as a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles cut Pitt's lead to seven. The Panthers would respond in the bottom of the frame, as a solo homer from Perry, his 11th of the season, gave Pitt the 9-1 advantage.
Pitt continued to roll in the fifth, scoring a pair. Doubles from MacLaren and Popa followed by a single from Yanni gave the Panthers an 11-1 lead through five. A solo homer from Zach Klapak in the sixth, extended the advantage to 12-1.
After a lone run for the Hawks in the seventh, the Panthers didn't let up, scoring seven in the bottom of the inning to grab a 19-2 lead. After a single from Chris Cappas and back-to-back walks to JC Mendez and Luca Lotito tied things up with no outs, a hit by pitch to Kris Soto and walk to Bryce Moskiewicz brought a pair around. Klapak would continue his hot day, doubling to left field, scoring two to make it 16-2 in favor of the Panthers.
Gregory Ryan Jr. would follow with an RBI single, before Cappas, in his second at bat of the inning, would draw a walk to bring Klapak home. Another bases loaded walk to Mendez concluded the scoring for the Panthers as Pitt took a 17-run lead.
It was more of the same in the eighth for the home team as Pitt was once again able to push seven across. Back-to-back doubles from Soto and Moskiewicz put a pair in scoring position before a walk to Klapak loaded things up with no outs. A two-run single down the left field line from Ryan Jr. got things going before a wild pitch moved both into scoring position.
Andres Antonini sent a sacrifice fly to center field before Nico Samarkos collected an RBI single through the left side. After a single from Cappas put two on, Mendez would launch his first career homer over the scoreboard in left field, giving Pitt a 26-2 lead it would not relinquish.
Freshman Mason Ronan (1-0) earned his first career victory in his first start, going four innings, allowing one run off five hits and four walks, striking out four and holding the Hawks without an extra base knock. William Kirwan threw three frames of relief, allowing one run off two hits and a walk. Jack Hogan closed things out, letting up one hit over two innings, striking out one.
Offensively, Popa continued to pace the group, going 4-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to bring his average near the .350 mark. Yanni ended the afternoon with six RBI, going 2-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Mendez collected four RBI, going 1-1 with two runs scored and a pair of walks.
The Panthers return to ACC play this weekend, traveling to perennial powerhouse Florida State for a three-game series as Bell makes his first trip to his former team. Things will get underway in Tallahassee, Fla., Friday at 6 p.m. with game two set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
