Yanni Homers Three Times in Season Finale
ATLANTA – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team closed out the 2019 season in the win column, defeating No. 7 Georgia Tech 9-3 at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta Saturday afternoon.
David Yanni used five at bats to tally three home runs, including a grand slam, as the redshirt junior collected eight RBI and was responsible for all but one of the Panthers' runs. Freshman starter Billy Corcoran had a career performance, holding the ACC's top offensive team to just two runs on six hits, setting a new career mark with seven strikeouts.
The Panthers put pressure on early, taking the lead in the second off a two-run homer from Yanni. He would continue to dominate Georgia Tech starter Curt Roedig in his next at bat, launching a grand slam to right field to putt Pitt up 6-0.
Georgia Tech would get one back in the third on an RBI single and another in the sixth on a line drive up the middle as the Panthers took a 6-2 lead into the seventh.
Pitt would score its seventh of the game in the seventh after a leadoff double from Connor Perry put a runner on, as he would move to third and score on a pair of wild pitches. Yanni's fantastic day wasn't done, however, as the redshirt junior launched his third homer of the game over the wall in right field, scoring Bryce O'Farrell, who had drawn a walk, to give the Panthers the 9-2 lead.
The Yellow Jackets' offense managed to push one across in the seventh, but couldn't pull any closer as Pitt held on for the 9-3 victory.
Yanni's three-homer performance led the way for the Panthers as the shortstop collected a career-best eight RBI. Pitt tallied 10 hits on the afternoon, with seven different batters tallying at least one knock.
Corcoran (2-6) was masterful in his final start of the season, going 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs off six hits and four walks, fanning a career-high seven batters. Chris Gomez tossed two innings, allowing one run off three hits, fanning one. Georgia native Chase Smith closed things out, fanning one in the ninth to secure the win.
The Panthers conclude the 2019 season 21-34, 8-22 in the ACC. In addition to Saturday's victory, Pitt captured marquee wins over No. 11 North Carolina and powerhouse Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. Four seniors will be leaving the program as the Panthers say goodbye to William Kirwan, Lucas Maldonado, Cole MacLaren and Connor Perry.
