PITTSBURGH – Seven University of Pittsburgh athletic programs – baseball, football, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track & field – set or matched their highest multi-year Academic Progress Report scores as released by the NCAA Wednesday.
"Our expectation of comprehensive excellence includes performing at the highest level academically," said Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "To see 11 of our programs reach or exceed the national average with seven programs posting their highest multi-year scores speaks to the quality of student-athletes our coaches recruit, their commitment towards their education and the focus of our athletic department to support their academic goals. We are proud of our student-athletes' accomplishments and their dedication to achieving their academic goals which will serve them well in life after Pitt."
Pitt had 11 of its 17 programs perform at or above the national average for multi-year rate ending with the 2017-18 academic year, including the women's basketball, women's tennis and women's cross country teams that posted a perfect 1,000 scores to earn APR Public Recognition honors. The women's tennis team posted a perfect score for the fifth consecutive year and seventh time overall since the start of the APR. Women's cross country posted a perfect score of 1,000 for the second consecutive year and third time overall, while women's basketball accomplished the feat for the first time.
Programs performing at or above the national average were men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's swimming and diving, wrestling, women's basketball, women's cross country, softball, women's track, women's tennis and volleyball. Six programs finished 10 or more points above the national average, including men's basketball and women's basketball, whose scores were 18 points higher than the national average.
Pitt's scores were at or above last year's marks for 11 of 17 programs, with women's basketball showing the largest jump of +11 points. The Panther baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's track & field, women's basketball, women's cross country, gymnastics, women's tennis, women's track & field and women's volleyball programs each matched or were above their 2016-17 multi-year marks.
The Panthers also had six programs – men's basketball, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's cross country, volleyball and women's tennis - post perfect single-year APR scores of 1,000 in 2017-18.
The 2017-18 overall four-year rate is 983, remaining the same from a year ago and matching the all-time high four-year Academic Progress Rate.
Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, similar to a report card. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. As tracked through the APR, more than 14,000 former college athletes have returned to school to get their degrees since the NCAA created the measurement tool. Each of those students earns back a lost APR point for their team. More than 7,500 competed in baseball, men's basketball, football and women's basketball - the highest-profile sports in college athletics. Each of those graduates earned APR points for their team.
Rates are a calculation of each school's performance for the last four years. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are available online through the NCAA's searchable database.
