ATLANTA – The Pitt volleyball team claimed at least a share of its fourth consecutive ACC Championship, closing out the regular season with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-7 sweep at Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon. Pitt improved to 26-4 overall with the win, while Georgia Tech fell to 16-13, including an 11-9 record in ACC play.
With the victory, Pitt improved to 18-2 and now awaits the result of tonight's Stanford (17-2) at Louisville (16-3) match. If Louisville wins at home, Pitt will be the sole ACC champion; otherwise, Pitt and Stanford will share the crown.
Pitt dominated at the net, posting 18.0 team blocks. It is the third-most in a three-set match in an NCAA Division I match this year and the most for a Pitt team in a three-set match since at least 2011. Abbey Emch led the way with a career-best 10 blocks, while Blaire Bayless and Bre Kelley had six each. It was Pitt's seventh consecutive match with at least 10.0 team blocks.
Pitt used a 6-0 run, highlighted by two kills and a block from Marina Pezelj, to build an 11-3 lead in the opening set. Georgia Tech slowly climbed back and tied the score at 22-22 after five consecutive points, but the Panthers responded down the stretch. With the score still even at 23-23, the Yellow Jackets committed a service error, and Brooke Mosher followed with an ace to secure the 25-23 victory.
The second set went back and forth early, with neither team leading by more than two points until Pitt used a 5-2 run to go ahead 14-11. Olivia Babcock earned her 1,500th career kill to extend the Panthers' lead to 15-12. Pitt reeled off 6-of-7 points to build a 21-14 advantage before cruising to the 25-19 win.
Pitt ran away early in the third set, scoring seven of the first nine points before Georgia Tech burned a timeout. The Panthers used another seven-point spurt for a 14-3 advantage and Pitt kept the offense rolling for the 25-7 Win.
Along with her six blocks, Bayless led the way with 13 kills for Pitt. Babcock added 10 kills, a team-best seven digs and three blocks. Mosher handed out 26 assists, led the Panthers with two aces, and had four digs and three blocks.
With the victory, Pitt improves to 9-0 all-time at Georgia Tech and earns its seventh ACC Championship in program history. The Panthers will now await their NCAA Tournament fate, with the NCAA Selection Show set to take place Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
