Panthers Win Four Events Against Top-10 Ranked Michigan, Sweep Oakland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Pitt swimming and diving team turned in an impressive showing Friday at the Tri-Meet against Michigan and Oakland, highlighted by event wins from both the men's and women's diving squads and four first-place finishes in swimming.
With a sweep over Oakland, the Panthers improved to 3-1 on the men's side and 4-1 on the women's side this season.
For the women, Claire Jansen earned a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:58.01) and a runner-up showing in the 100 back (54.48). Mary Clarke also posted a strong performance, placing second in the 100 back (54.95).
Sydney Gring captured the top spot in the 100 butterfly (53.46), while Allie Witdoeckt rounded out the top three with a season-best time of 54.82.
Emily Bucaro placed third in the 1000 freestyle (10:13.16) and earning runner-up honors in the 500 free (5:00.21). Kimmy Shannon added a third-place finish in the 500 (5:06.04) and took second in the 200 IM (2:04.88).
Avery Kudlac and Anna Wiechertjes each placed in the top five in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Kudlac touched second in the 100 (50.38) and tied for third in the 50 (23.31), while Wiechertjes matched that 23.31 in the 50 free. The Pitt women's 200 medley relay team of Jansen, Jessica Strong, Gring and Clarke also secured a second-place finish with a time of 1:40.58.
On the men's side, Julian Koch paced the Panthers with wins in both the 50 freestyle (19.83) and 100 freestyle (43.99). Donat Fabian added a third-place finish in the 50 free (20.43). Alan Vergine impressed with three runner-up finishes in the 200 butterfly (1:45.97), 200 IM (1:50.82) and 100 butterfly (48.26). Patrizio Costanza notched a top-three showing in the 200 freestyle (1:38.05) and tied for fourth in the 500 free (4:32.31).
The Panthers capped the meet with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400 freestyle relay. The women's team of Kudlac, Gring, Jansen and Clarke posted a time of 3:22.08, while the men's squad of Koch, Georg Filippov, Costanza and James Allison finished in 2:57.79.
The Pitt divers also stood out, led by Mariana Osorio Mendoza, who took second in both the 1-meter (305.25) and 3-meter (296.95) events to qualify for NCAA Zones. Ayla Debowsky finished third on the 1-meter with a score of 283.20 to also secure her spot at Zones. On the men's side, Noah Bernard and Chase Marafioto placed second and third, respectively, on the 3-meter board with scores of 367.10 and 345.05, both earning NCAA Zone qualifications. The Pitt diving team ended the day with the overall Championship Team Award, finding victories on both the men's and women's events.
