GREENSBORO, NC – Pitt broke nine school records in the pool on day two of the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Wednesday.
Fifth-year senior, Sophie Yendell, went on to break the women's 50 freestyle record three separate times throughout the day as she placed fourth in the event, .04 seconds away from a podium finish.
The Panthers set new school records in the men's and women's 200 freestyle relays, the men's and women's 200 IM, and the women's 50 freestyle. Each individual event record was broken at least twice throughout the day. Yendell set the women's 50 freestyle record three times, Gring set the women's 200 IM record twice and Matteazzi set the men's 200 IM record twice.
Prelims
The Panthers broke three school records and qualified for five finals during Wednesday's prelims.
Sophie Yendell set the school record for the women's 50 free and qualified for A-Finals in her preliminary swim. Yendell's 21.68 broke her previous mark that was set at last year's ACC Championships.
Sophomore Sydney Gring set the school record in the women's 200 IM with her 1:56.67 and qualified for B-Finals. It was her second record of the week at the time.
Max Matteazzi followed her up in the men's 200 IM with a school record of his own, finishing with a 1:43.46 and also qualifying for B-Finals.
Donat Fabian swam a 19.34 in the men's 50 free and qualified himself for B-Finals while Julian Koch qualified for C-Finals after swimming a 19.41.
Finals
The women's 200 freestyle relay team got Wednesday's finals started with a bang as they set a school record in the first event of the evening with their 1:27.78. Pitt's relay of Yendell, Kudlac, Wiechertjes and Jansen was nearly three seconds faster than was in 2022. The school record time was also an NCAA A-Cut. Sophie Yendell's lead off leg of 21.40 broke her own 50 freestyle record from the prelims.
Her record did not last long, however, as she broke it again in the A-Final later in the session, while also hitting an NCAA A-Cut. Yendell set the women's 50 freestyle record three separate times on Wednesday, finishing with her best time of 21.30 and 4th-place finish in the A-Final. It was the highest finish in that event at the ACC Championships in program history. She is currently the sixth-fastest in the country in the 50 freestyle and 15th all time in the event.
The men followed suit as they had on Tuesday by also setting a school record in their relay. The men's 200 freestyle relay of Fabian, Koch, Mortimer and Radziszewski swam a 1:17.18 and finished 11th.
Sydney Gring and Max Matteazzi each broke their own records from this morning in the 200 IMs. Gring finished 10th overall with her 1:56.45 while Matteazzi swam a 1:43.34 and finished 4th in the B-Final.
Julian Koch and Donat Fabian each swam in the in the men's 50 free finals. Koch swam a 19.55 in the C-Final as Fabian finished second in the B-Final with a 19.20.
