
Pitt Surges to Halfway Point at ACC Championships; Set Five More School Records

GREENSBORO, NC - On the third day of the ACC Championships, the Panthers set five more school records, bringing their total to 18 for the week.
Pitt broke 10 school records at the ACC Championships in 2024 and 21 school records the year prior, in 2023.
On top of their five school records on Thursday, Pitt had seven finalists compete in the evening session, including Max Matteazzi who finished 4th in the men's 400 IM.
Prelims
Pitt broke two school records and qualified for seven finals during Thursday morning's prelims. At the time, it was the Panthers' 14th and 15th records of the meet.
Max Matteazzi broke his third school record of the championships in the men's 400 IM prelim, swimming a 3:41.56 and qualifying for A-Finals.
Marcin Goraj broke Pitt's second record of the day and his first individual of the week, swimming a 1:33.80 in the men's 200 freestyle. Goraj won his heat and earned a spot in the B-Final.
Sophie Yendell qualified for her second A-Final of the week with her 51.20 in the women's 100 fly. Sydney Gring swam a 52.14 in the 100 fly as well, as she qualified for the B-Final.
Michal Piela joined Matteazzi in the men's 400 IM finals, placing 10th and qualifying for the B-Final with his 3:43.75.
School record holder in the women's 400 IM, freshman Kimmy Shannon, qualified for the B-Final with her 4:11.54 on Thursday morning.
Avery Kudlac, who holds the school record for the 200 freestyle, would swim a 1:45.99 as she qualified for the C-Final.
Women's diver Jess Vega scored points for the Panthers on the 3-Meter, finishing 22nd with her 263.55.
Finals
The Panthers would set three more school records in the even session on Thursday, bringing their total to 18 over the first three days of the ACC Championships.
Kimmy Shannon re-broke who own school record from earlier this season in the women's 400 IM, swimming a 4:08.47 and finishing 8th overall and second in the B-Final. Shannon stormed back in the last 25 yards of her freestyle, catching most of the field and breaking another school record. The freshman likely qualified for NCAAs with her swim, becoming the first freshman since Claire Jansen in 2022-23 to individually qualify for NCAAs.
Max Matteazzi set Pitt's men's 400 IM record for the second time today in finals, it's the second-consecutive day that he broke a record in the prelims and finals. Matteazzi's 3:40.89 placed him fourth overall in the men's 400 IM. The ffith-year senior won silver in the event last year. Michal Piela swam a 3:44.08 in the 400 IM, finishing fifth in the B-Final.
Fifth-year senior Sophie Yendell placed seventh overall in the women's 100 fly with her 51.13. Sydney Gring swam a 51.25 and finished second in the B-Final.
Pitt had two finalists in the 200 freestyle. Avery Kudalc led off the pair with her 1:45.78 in the C-Final of the women's 200 freestyle. She holds the school record at 1:45.38.
In the final event of the night, Marcin Goraj went out and broke his 200 freestyle record from earlier in the morning. Goraj swam a 1:33.49 and finished 5th in the B-Final.
