PITTSBURGH – Pitt has signed 2025 First Team All-Sun Belt selection Barry Dunning Jr., as officially announced by head coach Jeff Capel Saturday afternoon. Dunning averaged 15.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game with .457/.310/.763 shooting splits, while leading South Alabama to a 21-11 record last season.
"Barry is a dynamic athlete who has continued to improve throughout his college career," said Capel. "He can score at all three levels and also impacts the game with his rebounding ability from the wing. He was a highly touted prospect out of high school and showed why last season at South Alabama. We believe he has the ability to make another big jump in his game and we are eager to help him maximize his talent here at Pitt."
The Mobile, Ala., native scored in double figures 25 times, including five games with 20 or more points scored, and added six double-doubles last season. He tallied a South Alabama record with 46 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field, including 9-of-12 from three-point range, and 11-of-11 from the foul line against Texas State on Feb. 15. He averaged 22.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest over the final 10 games of the season.
Dunning began his career at Arkansas and also spent one season at UAB. Dunning has totaled 507 points, 251 rebounds, 73 assists, and 33 steals over 63 career games (32 starts). He is 195-of-436 (.447) from the field, including 40-of-133 (.301) from three-point range, and 77-of-102 (.755) from the foul line in his career.
A two-time Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year selection (2021 and 2022), Dunning was ranked No. 74 overall by ESPN coming out of high school. As a senior, he posted 25.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game at McGill-Toolen Catholic.
Dunning joins a Pitt transfer class that currently features veteran guard Damarco Minro (Oregon State), former Iowa State starting center Dishon Jackson as well as talented rising sophomore guard Nojus Indrusaitis (Iowa State). The Panthers remain active in the transfer portal as they look to remake the roster with four scholarship returnees (Papa Amadou Kante, Cameron Corhen, Brandin Cummings, and Amdy Ndiaye) from last year's team that was ranked as high as No. 18 in the AP Poll before struggling down the stretch to finish 17-15 overall and 8-12 in the ACC.
