
Pitt Athletics Posts Strong APR Scores for 2023-24

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh had a school-record 15 athletic programs – baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's soccer, men's swimming & diving, men's track & field, men's wrestling, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's track & field, and women's volleyball post single-year 1000 APR scores for 2023-24 as released by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon.
In addition, 14 athletic programs –men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and men's d wrestling– improved upon or matched their multi-year Academic Progress Report scores from the 2022-23 numbers.
Volleyball and women's cross country also received Top 10 recognition for ranking in the top 10 percent in their sport for the multi-year score.
In addition, Pitt had 12 programs perform at or above the national average for multi-year rate ending with the 2022-23 academic year. The Pitt basketball program finished 21 points higher than the national average, while men's soccer (15), women's basketball (13), women's cross country (11), and volleyball (10) also exceeded the national mark by double-digits.
The Panthers volleyball and women's cross country programs posted perfect multi-year APR score of 1,000, while 15 programs (baseball, gymnastics, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's soccer, men's swimming & diving, men's track & field, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's track & field, volleyball, and wrestling) posted single-year scores of 1,000 for 2023-24.
The four-year Academic Progress Rate national average for Division I teams remained steady at 984 this year, as the division marked the 21st anniversary of APR data collection. During those 21 years, overall student-athlete academic success has risen substantially.
In the past 21 years, 21,977 student-athletes have earned APR points for their former team by returning to college after their eligibility expired and completing their degree. Over 11,000 former student-athletes in the four high-profile sports (football, baseball, men's basketball, and women's basketball) returned to college and graduated, earning their former team APR points. Note that these student-athletes are not typically counted as graduates in the calculation of the federal graduation rate or the GSR.
Rates are a calculation of each school's performance for the last four years. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are available online through the NCAA's searchable database.
