PITTSBURGH — Each week, as Pitt prepares for its next opponent, we'll look at what the other side is saying about the Panthers. Here's a snapshot of how Duquesne is sizing up Pitt ahead of Saturday's matchup at Acrisure Stadium.
Respect for Pitt's Tempo
Duquesne defensive back Antonio Epps noted the challenge of matching Pitt's offensive speed:
"We know they're going to come out fast-paced, real tempo, try to speed us up and catch us off guard. That's something we're looking forward to and we expect."
Looking Back at History
Epps also acknowledged the significance of renewing a long-dormant crosstown series:
"Two Pittsburgh teams finally get to play against each other again. It's like the 'city game' in basketball… it's finally good to go out there and play the Pittsburgh FBS team."
A Coach's Perspective
Duquesne head coach Jerry Schmitt, in his 21st season leading the Dukes, reflected on the matchup and on Pitt's strength:
"They're a really talented football team. I don't think last year's record was indicative of how good they are. They suffered a couple bad breaks in close games, and they have a lot of guys back."
Extra Motivation for the Dukes
Schmitt said the game has long been on Duquesne fans' minds:
"I had to answer questions all the years from all the alums: 'When are we playing Pitt? When are we playing Pitt?' … It's great to play in our hometown. I'm a Pittsburgh guy, born and raised, and this is a unique and special opportunity."
An Offensive Lineman's Take
Duquesne offensive lineman Cameron McLaurin said his unit's focus is steady regardless of opponent:
"It doesn't matter if it's Alabama or Sisters of the Poor. We're going to prepare the same way every time. Coach says that, we try to reiterate it, and we try to take it down to the ranks—everyone same mentality."
Family and Hometown Ties
McLaurin also emphasized the pride that comes with playing at Acrisure Stadium:
"I've got a good bit of family coming out—my aunts, uncles, some people traveling. I'm excited for them to come out and watch me play."
