PITTSBURGH – Pitt's men and women finished strong at the TYR Summer Championships this week, placing fourth overall. The men finished in sixth place while the women earned a podium finish as they came in second.
The women were consistent all week, earning third place finishes in the 400 Medley, 400 Free and 800 Free relays.
The Pitt men brought home a gold medal in the 400m Free Relay on Wednesday night. The relay team of Julian Koch, Eli Hobson, Mason Leach and Alex Bauer combined for winning time of 3:22.30.
Julian Koch continued his dominant summer with another medal, this time in the men's 100m Free. Koch won silver on Thursday night as he swam a 48.57. The rising sophomore also won a silver medal in the 400 Free Relay one month ago when he represented Germany at the European U23 Championships.
Pitt's women earned a podium finish as well, placing third and taking bronze in the 400m Free Relay. Pitt's foursome of Sydney Gring, Avery Kudlac, Mary Clarke and Claire Jansen finished with a 3:45.01. Gring, Kudlac, Clarke and Jansen each qualified for the NCAA Championships last year and all currently hold at least one school record.
The Panthers earned two more podium finishes to close out the final two days of competition. Pitt's 400 Medley Relay of Jansen, Lavorini, Gring and Clarke (4:09.67) and 800 Free Relay of Kudlac, Gring, Shannon and Clarke (8:18.09) each placed third to round a strong week of swimming.
With the women's bronze medals on each of the final two days, they earned themselves a second place finish overall and helped the Panthers as a whole place fourth.
