
No. 9 Pitt Sweeps No. 7 Arizona State to Wrap up State Farm Showcase

PITTSBURGH – The No. 9 Pitt volleyball team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) earned its first sweep of the season against No. 7 Arizona State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) in the State Farm Showcase at PPG Paints Arena on Monday evening. The Panthers earned wins in both of their games in the showcase after also defeating No. 25 TCU Sunday afternoon.
Pitt was led offensively by Blaire Bayless, who had a team-high nine kills on a .292 hitting clip. Olivia Babcock and Dagmar Mourits each logged six kills. As a team, the Panthers recorded 32 kills and seven aces. Setter Brooke Mosher had a team-high 21 assists and earned three kills on just four attacks.
The Panthers held the Sun Devils to a .051 hitting clip and 31 team kills. Bre Kelley had a match-high seven blocks as the Panthers combined for 14 in the match. Kelley earned her 500th career kill in the third set and logged four on the night.
Pitt took a 1-0 match lead in a first set that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. Despite an early Arizona State 5-0 lead, Pitt led at the media timeout behind the serve of Babcock, who aced the Sun Devils to give the Panthers a 15-14 lead. A Mourits kill on set point gave the Panthers the first set, 25-21.
Ignited by an 8-1 run mid set, the Panthers took set two 25-18. Forcing an early Sun Devil timeout was Bayless, whose block established a 10-7 Pitt lead. A block and kill from Pitt's middle tandem Ryla Jones and Kelley sealed the set and gave Pitt a 2-0 match lead.
Head coach Dan Fisher went 2-for-2 in challenges in the match as his second came early in the third set to reverse a touch call against the Panthers. Mosher gave Pitt its first lead of the final set at 6-5 with a crowd-energizing kill. Pitt kept its lead through the media timeout with a 10-1 tilt and took the final set 25-16.
Pitt faces Pepperdine next in the Fitzgerald Field House on Friday, Sept. 5. The match is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ACCNX.
NOTES
• Bre Kelley reached 500 career kills in the third set and had four in the match.
• Kelley also had a match-high seven blocks.
• Blaire Bayless led the Panthers in kills for the first time this season, notching nine in the contest.
• Emery Dupes logged a team-high eight digs, followed by Babcock with six and Mosher and Marina Pezelj with five.
