DAYTON, OHIO – The No. 7 Pitt volleyball team (6-2, 0-0 ACC) earned its sixth straight win against Wright State (3-3, 0-0 Horizon League) 25-27, 25-18, 25-22, 25-11 on Friday night at the Nutter Center. Olivia Babcock recorded a double-double with a match-high 20 kills and 11 digs, along with five blocks and two aces. Freshman Abbey Emch notched a personal best seven kills along with three blocks, and Brooke Mosher led the Pitt offense with 46 assists and 11 digs and added a pair of kills and aces.
Wright State started the first set hot on a 5-2 run, and Pitt took an early timeout. The Panthers picked up their play and forced the Raiders to take a timeout with a narrow 19-17 lead. A Babcock ace and a Bre Kelley kill caused Wright State to take its final timeout, down 22-17. The Raiders went on a 3-0 run and flipped the script as Pitt took a timeout of its own with a narrow 22-20 advantage. Despite having set point at 24-23, the Panthers were unable to close it out and lost the first set, 25-27.
Both teams continued going back and forth in the second set as Pitt held a 15-13 lead at the media break. Mallorie Meyer went on a 3-0 run in the following stretch behind tough serving and forced the Raiders to take a timeout down 13-18. Babcock and Mourits continued firing on the offensive end, helping Pitt to a 23-16 lead, but a pair of points that went Wright State's way made Dan Fisher call a timeout. A kill from Blaire Bayless and an ace from Haiti Tautua'a gave Pitt the second set victory, 25-18.
Izzy Masten served Pitt to a 4-0 lead in the third, and the Panthers continued to hold the advantage at 15-12 at the media timeout. A handful of Wright State errors and an ace from Mosher was enough for the Raiders to talk things over, down 15-19. Despite their best efforts, the Raiders were unable to close the gap as a kill from Mourits sealed the third set, 25-22.
Meyer once again went on an efficient scoring run in the fourth to give Pitt an early 9-4 advantage. The Panthers maintained their momentum for the remainder of the set to win in convincing 25-11 fashion, ultimately allowing Pitt to leave the Nutter Center with a 3-1 victory.
