Tim O’Toole Named To Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches List

PITTSBURGH – Pitt Associate Head Coach Tim O'Toole has been recognized on the seventh annual Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches List, as announced Monday. The list highlights 100 high major assistant coaches who make an impact on their programs.
O'Toole is in his eighth season at Pitt, serving on head coach Jeff Capel's staff. With 33 years of Division I coaching experience, including eight years as a head coach, his wealth of knowledge and passion have been instrumental to the success of multiple programs during his career.
O'Toole's impact has been felt at Pitt as his tireless energy on the bench and on the recruiting trail have helped rebuild and revitalize the Pitt program. During the 2024-25 season, O'Toole helped the Panthers post their third consecutive winning season and was instrumental in the development of transfer Cameron Corhen, who averaged 11.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting a team-high 63.5 percent from the field. Corhen ranked second in the ACC in field goal percentage among players with 4.0+ makes per game and posted the third-highest single-season field goal percentage in program history.
O'Toole, who prides himself on player and team success, has established a reputation as a strong in-game tactician. He has coached alongside two of the winningest coaches in NCAA history in NABC College Basketball Hall of Fame inductees Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim.
Prior to Pitt, O'Toole spent two seasons as associate head coach at Cal and three years as an assistant at Stanford, where he helped key the Cardinal's 2014 Sweet 16 run and 2015 NIT Championship. He also helped Syracuse reach the 2013 Final Four and spent two years at Duke, where he coached a young Jeff Capel and helped bring in the nation's No. 1 recruiting class featuring Elton Brand and Shane Battier.
O'Toole spent eight seasons (1998-2006) as head coach at his alma mater, Fairfield, where he was honored as the 2003-04 MAAC Coach of the Year. He has also been an assistant coach at Seton Hall, Iona and Army.
A native of White Plains, N.Y., O'Toole was a four-year letterwinner at Fairfield, leading the Stags to back-to-back MAAC titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. He was inducted into the Fairfield Hall of Fame in 2017.
O'Toole has received numerous honors and awards, including being named the Connecticut Multiple Sclerosis 2005 Person of the Year. In 2004, he was inducted into the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame, and he was a 2008 inductee into the Archbishop Stepinac High School Hall of Fame. In 2017, O'Toole was inducted into the Fairfield Hall of Fame.
O'Toole earned his bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Fairfield in 1987 and his MBA in finance from Fordham in 1990.
