Pitt Swimming and Diving Programs Compete in Season Opener at CMU Relays; Women's Team Posts Wins

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt swimming and diving program opened the season at the Carnegie Mellon Relays Saturday. The women's team was victorious over Duquesne and CMU with 85 team points. The men fell to Carnegie Mellon 84-72.
The Pitt women were victorious in six of the seven events on the day.
Avery Kudlak collected five event wins, helping the 200-yard medley, 500-yard freestyle 3x100 yard butterfly, 3x100 yard backstroke, and 200-yard freestyle relays to wins.
Freshmen Emery Vannah and Amy Shonk made an immediate impact in their Panther debuts. Shonk helped the 200-yard medley to a victory and Vannah was a member of the winning 3x100 yard butterfly relay.
The men's team won three events to open the season.
Freshman Matthew Karasek was a part of every winning relay, as the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and the 3x100 yard backstroke teams touched the wall first for Pitt.
In diving action, the Pitt women's team of Ellie Williams, Jocelyn Brooks and Mariana Osorio Mendoza won with a score of 311.00. The team of Ayla Debowsky, Marleigh daSilva, and Cassie Guerrera collected second place with a total of 259.30.
On the men's side, Thibault Lede, Luke Leale, and Trevor Kuhn won with a score of 318.15.
Chase Marafioto, Ramez Diaa Sobhy, and Noah Bernard posted a second-place score of 259.30.
The Panthers are back in action Friday, Oct. 9 at Michigan.
