PITTSBURGH – The Panthers' potent offense struck again in their 16-2 victory over Ohio on Wednesday afternoon. Pitt slugged three homers and scored double digit runs for the fourth time in their last five games.
Pitt's win this afternoon was their fifth in a row. They averaged 13.8 runs per game over that stretch, scoring 69 runs in those five contests.
Carter Dierdorf (2-3, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) hit his third home run in as many games and drove in four runs in the win. He slugged a three-run shot in the sixth and an RBI double in the third. Catcher Sebastian Pisacreta (2-4, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI) got Pitt's offense rolling with a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. The grand slam was the Panthers' third in their last five games. Lorenzo Carrier (3-3, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI) added to his team-leading RBI tally with four more in the win this afternoon. Carrier blasted his third long ball of the year on a three-run homer in the sixth inning. True freshman Mason Ligenza collected his first career hit and first career RBIs on a pinch-hit three-run double.
Antonio Doganiero earned his second win of the season in another strong midweek start. He tied his career-high for strikeouts with six over his 4.2 innings. Doganiero struck out the side in the top of the first and began his outing with four scoreless innings. Mikey Gray and Sam Bryan combined for four strikeouts over 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The long ball proved to be lethal yet again for the Panthers as Sebastian Pisacreta blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers got their offense started with two outs in the bottom of the first on a Trey Fenderson single that was sandwiched between Lorenzo Carrier and Kai Wagner walks. That loaded the bases for Pisacreta who blasted his fourth home run of the season, giving Pitt an early 4-0 lead.
Pitt added five more runs in the bottom of the third inning as they extended their lead to nine. First baseman Carter Dierdorf roped an RBI double into the gap and would be driven in two at-bats later on a Julian Irizarry RBI single up the middle. With runners on first and second, Lorenzo Carrier unleashed on a 1-0 pitch, slugging his third long ball of the season. His three-run homer gave the Panthers a 9-0 lead after three innings.
Antonio Doganiero continued to deal for the Panthers, striking out a career-high six batters over four scoreless innings to start his outing.
The Bobcats got a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning but their offense would stop there. Pitt led 9-2 through five.
The Panther offense exploded for seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending Wednesday's contest in just seven innings. Carter Dierdorf got the inning started with a three-run blast to right center. He's hit a home run in each of Pitt's last three games. Lorenzo Carrier would drive in his fourth run of the game on an RBI single to left that drove in Irizarry from second, making it an 11-run ballgame. With the bases loaded, true freshman Mason Ligenza launched a bases-clearing pinch-hit double off the wall in left center for his first career hit and first career RBIs.
Sam Bryan came in and shut the door in the top of the seventh as the Panthers would go on to win 16-2 over the Bobcats.
Pitt now heads to the west coast for seven-game road trip that kicks off this Friday at San Jose State.
