PITTSBURGH—Pitt Football continued its spring practice schedule Wednesday with a crisp and controlled second session, giving Head Coach Pat Narduzzi an early sense of encouragement as the Panthers build toward their first padded workout later this week.
Following Monday's opening practice, Wednesday's workout marked the team's second day in "spiders" (shells). Narduzzi said it was one of the cleanest second practices he has seen during his tenure at Pitt, pointing to the group's discipline and attention to detail throughout the afternoon.
"Usually you watch the tape from the first day and then come back and it's a little chaotic," Narduzzi said afterward. "But the guys did a great job taking care of each other and playing smart. It was a really good practice."
The Panthers continued installing both sides of the ball while emphasizing communication and situational awareness as they move deeper into the early stages of spring ball.
Defensively, Pitt returns several experienced players in the front seven, including veteran defensive lineman Sean FitzSimmons. Entering his fifth spring with the program, FitzSimmons said the focus this offseason has been on improving both physically and mentally while stepping into a larger leadership role for the defense.
"Time flies," FitzSimmons said. "This is my last spring ball, so I'm just trying to enjoy it and make the most of it. I feel great right now and I've been working on all aspects of my game."
FitzSimmons also credited the continuity along the defensive line as a key advantage early in camp. With several returning players already familiar with Pitt's system, the group has been able to help younger teammates adjust quickly.
"It's great having that core back," he said. "We know the system and we can help teach the younger guys. I think that will help us have a really good year."
Narduzzi also praised the consistency and versatility of defensive lineman Isaiah Neal, who moved to defensive end midway through last season and has continued to stand out during the early practices.
"He's so trustworthy and does everything the right way," Narduzzi said. "He's a really consistent player and that's what you want to see."
Offensively, senior lineman Ryan Baer said the unit is motivated to raise its level of play after finishing last season short of its expectations. With multiple returning starters along the line, Baer believes the group's experience and chemistry can translate into improved performance this fall.
"As an O-line, we just haven't stepped up to the standard the past couple years," Baer said. "At this point, talk is cheap. We've got to show up on Saturdays and prove that we've gotten better."
Baer said the returning continuity across the offensive front should help the unit improve its execution as spring continues.
"When you've played together and understand how everyone plays, it makes a big difference," he said. "It helps having that chemistry."
Early impressions of newcomers have also been positive. Narduzzi pointed to offensive lineman Netinho Olivieri's steady play and the athleticism of transfer Kanye Thompson as early standouts as the coaching staff continues evaluating the roster.
The Panthers will get their first true physical test of the spring later this week. Pitt returns to the practice field Friday, when the team will put on pads for the first time.
