PITTSBURGH – Pitt outfielder Lorenzo Carrier was named as one of the nine finalists for the Tony Gwynn Community Service Trophy, the NCBWA announced today.
The Gwynn Trophy, conceptualized for the 2025 season, is intended to honor collegiate baseball student-athletes who are active in their community and represent their programs with integrity, while exceling in the classroom and on the field.
Carrier has been very involved in the community since enrolling at Pitt in 2024. He helped run a baseball clinic for the Base-ABLE Special Olympics Foundation where he and his teammates provided and encouraged an inclusive environment for individuals with mental or physical disabilities. Carrier has served as a buddy for every Miracle League game he attended, playing the entire game alongside his partner and giving both hitting and fielding tips to the athletes. He was also involved in a baseball clinic for Urban Impact, a clinic for at-risk children/youth of the North Side of Pittsburgh.
During the holiday season, Carrier not only helped organize and donate to the Pitt Pantry Thanksgiving Food Drives, but he wrapped and donated gifts for children in the Pittsburgh community during Christmas as well.
In the classroom, he has earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District, Academic All-ACC and ACC Academic Honor Roll honors throughout his career.
As for his contributions on the diamond, Carrier is having a breakout season for the Panthers. Currently, he is hitting .378 with 61 RBI, 59 hits, 55 runs scored, 50 walks, 18 home runs and 11 doubles. Carrier ranks first in the ACC in walks (50) and on-base percentage (.540), second in home runs (18), RBI (61) and slugging percentage (.821), fourth in total bases (128) and sixth in batting average (.378).
Carrier is closing in on the single-season program records for home runs, walks and RBI.
The Tony Gwynn Trophy is named in honor of Tony Gwynn who was a 15-time MLB All-Star, won eight batting titles – the most in National League history – and finished his decorated 20-year career with a .338 batting average. He played his entire career with the San Diego Padres, after playing collegiately at San Diego State, where he also played basketball. A 2007 Hall of Fame inductee, Gwynn saw the SDSU baseball facility named in his honor, Tony Gwynn Stadium, and served as the head coach of the Aztecs, from 2003-14, winning three Mountain West Conference Championships and earning 2014 MWC Coach of the Year honors. Gwynn passed away in 2014 after a long bout with cancer. He is survived by Alicia, son Tony Jr., and daughter, Anisha Nicole.
