Straight from the podium: What Pitt’s coaches and players are saying ahead of the season opener against Miami (Ohio).
PITTSBURGH—Defensive coordinator Cory Sanders, defensive lineman Zach Crothers and wide receiver Malik Knight discussed Pitt's preparation and excitement to face a new opponent.
Sanders: "You've got to win on first and second down."
Sanders expects Pitt's defensive identity to remain unchanged as he prepares to call the plays.
"We're going to stop the run," Sanders said. "You've got to win on first and second down to earn the right to rush the passer on third down."
Miami's mobile quarterbacks present an immediate test. Sanders said sound angles, leverage and pad level will be critical.
"You don't get redoes on Saturday," he said. "I love how intentional our guys are, and I'm excited to see them play together."
Crothers: "I appreciate being able to play football."
Crothers' return followed a lengthy rehabilitation that included learning to walk and run again before resuming football activities.
"It's been long. It's been hard, but it's been fun," Crothers said. "I feel good like I did last year. I'm glad to be out here again."
The experience changed his perspective on the game.
"When you're gone that long, you realize how much you miss playing football," he said. "I really do appreciate being able to play."
Knight: "Get it done. No excuses."
Knight said his familiarity with offensive coordinator Kade Bell and growing chemistry with quarterback Mason Heintschel have eased his transition.
"Mason is probably one of the best quarterbacks I've ever played with," Knight said. "The way he prepares is different, and that energy rubs off on me."
Knight believes Pitt's receivers can change games with their explosiveness. He also plans to use the threat of his speed to create opportunities underneath.
"Everybody thinks I'm just a speed guy," he said. "I'm going to make you think I'm always going deep, until I'm not."
Pitt opens the season Saturday against Miami (Ohio), giving the Panthers their first opportunity to turn an offseason of preparation into results.
