A Perfect Ten: No. 2 Pitt Improves To 10-0 With Sweep Of Wright State

PITTSBURGH, PA. – They passed the test with flying colors. No. 2 Pitt volleyball concluded six matches in nine days with six wins, including a 25-10, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of Wright State Sunday. Playing a pair of ranked opponents, the Panthers dropped just two sets during this exhausting portion of the schedule, which stretched from Utah to Florida and back to Pittsburgh, winning the final 15 sets in a row to close non-conference play with a perfect 10-0 record. Wright State fell to 4-5 with the loss.
Pitt has now earned a 12-day break to refocus and prepare for ACC play before welcoming Cal to the city on Sept. 25 for the first ever league match inside Victory Heights Arena.
Senior Olivia Babcock, the two-time AVCA National Player of the Year, proved her dominance once again Sunday, recording 13 kills on just 17 swings for a career-best .765 attack percentage. Freshman Ayanna Watson nearly matched her, finishing with 13 kills on 20 swings for a career-best .650 hitting percentage. Pitt hit .476 as a team with only three attack errors – one in each set.
FIRST SET
- Pitt jumped out quickly, building leads of 3-0 and 9-2.
- The Panthers continued to pull away, taking a 16-4 lead and rolling to the 25-10 win.
SECOND SET
- Wright State hung close early, tied at 5-5. But Pitt scored seven of the next nine points, forcing a Raiders' timeout, trailing 12-7.
- Pitt continued to pour it on and won the second set 25-14.
THIRD SET
- Pitt showed no let down in the third, scoring the first six points of the frame.
- Wright State was never able to rally from there and the Panthers posted an identical 25-14 set score.
NOTABLES
- With the win, Pitt's active home win streak sits at 56, tying Oral Roberts (1993-99) for the ninth-longest win streak in NCAA Division I history. That stretch includes 36 victories inside Fitzgerald Field House, 17 inside the Petersen Events Center and three inside Victory Heights Arena.
- Olivia Babcock's .765 attack percentage bettered her previous career-best of .652 (minimum 10 swings) against Georgia Tech in Nov. of 2023. She added a season-best three aces, five digs and four blocks.
- Freshman Maaike Heilig had seven blocks, three kills and an ace. It is Heilig's sixth match with at least five blocks in her young career.
- Freshman Lola Sageer made her collegiate debut and had two kills with a .667 attack percentage, two digs and a block.
- As a team, Pitt hit a season-best .476 and the Panthers hit at least .400 in six of the nine sets over the weekend.
- The Panthers out blocked Wright State 11.0-1.0.
- Pitt held a 36-29 advantage in digs and the Panthers have out dug every opponent this year.
- Pitt is yet to drop a set inside the program's new home of Victory Heights, sweeping all three matches over the weekend.
- Olivia Babcock had 149 kills through 10 matches a year ago when she set Pitt's single-season record. She has 164 kills through 10 matches this year.
- Pitt improves to a nation's best 162-20 since the start of the 2021 season, including 56-6 in non-conference contests.
- Pitt went unbeaten in non-conference play for the third time in the last six years (equaling an 11-0 mark in 2021 and a 10-0 record in 2024).
- Pitt is 18-2 all-time as the No. 2 ranked team in the country and 266-38 when ranked somewhere inside the AVCA Top 25 poll.
- Pitt sold out Victory Heights for all three days of the Panther Challenge over the weekend.
