2015: A former defensive lineman at Michigan State, Scarpinato earned his bachelor’s degree in three years and then pursued his aspirations in medicine by enrolling at the Medical College of Wisconsin…following a one-year hiatus from football, he joined Pitt in June 2015 as a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining…played in the season’s first eight games as a reserve defensive tackle before missing the balance of the year due to a concussion…had seven tackles, a TFL assist and a PBU on the year…had a season-high two stops in three separate games (Iowa, Virginia Tech and Virginia).
AT MICHIGAN STATE (2011-13): Played in all 14 games with two starts at defensive tackle for the Spartans’ 2013 Big Ten championship team…totaled 15 tackles on the season…had a career-high four tackles with a sack assist against Minnesota…starting assignments came against Illinois and Ohio State…2013 Academic All-Big Ten honoree…did not play in any games in 2012…redshirted as a freshman in 2011.
HIGH SCHOOL: Helped Marquette University High School to consecutive Wisconsin Division 1 state championships as a junior and senior…two-time Associated Press All-State…two-time Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) All-Region…selected the Greater Metro Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year as a senior after compiling 68 tackles, 21 TFLs and six sacks…rated the No. 7 overall prospect in Wisconsin by Rivals…played under head coaches Dick Basham and Jeff Mazurczak…also participated in track and field, excelling in the shot put.
PERSONAL: Mark Scarpinato, born 3/24/93, is the son of Len Scarpinato and Susan Roach…earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State in kinesiology…is enrolled in Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health and will pursue his master’s degree in health and policy management.
