Dan Cage enters his first season as an assistant coach and his second season at Pitt overall after serving as the Director of Basketball Operations in 2016-17. He has been a member of Kevin Stallings’ staff since his professional playing career ended in 2010, serving as the Director of Basketball Operations for the four seasons at Vanderbilt before coming to Pitt.
“Dan has done a tremendous job as a member of my staff and is well prepared to be an outstanding assistant coach,” said Stallings. “He has a great basketball mind and has a passion for teaching the game of basketball. Dan’s outstanding work ethic as a player has carried over into his professional career, making him an invaluable member of our coaching staff. The loyalty and energy he brings to our environment is immeasurable and I am excited to see him continue to grow as a coach.”
A disciple of Kevin Stallings and long-time assistant Tom Richardson, Cage is adept at individual skill development with a strong focus on ball handling and shooting technique. His ability to connect with young players was evident in his first summer on the job as Pitt inked the largest recruiting class in program history with 11 scholarship newcomers joining the roster.
Cage’s responsibilities as Director of Basketball Operations included practice logistics, running summer camps as well as assisting with academics, travel, scouting and alumni relations. While at Vanderbilt, he helped organize an alumni reunion and game that resulted in more than 70 former Commodores returning to Nashville for the event. He also helped organize a players reunion at Pitt in the summer of 2016 that saw nearly 100 former players, friends and family return to campus.
A four-year letterwinner at Vanderbilt (2003-07), Cage helped lead the Commodores to two Sweet Sixteen appearances (2004, 2007) and an 82-49 record overall. He finished his career with 755 points, 195 rebounds, 156 assists and 164 three-point field goals in 125 games (32 starts). Cage was also a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.
As a senior, Cage averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game, while starting 32 of 34 contests. He knocked down a team-high 80 three-point field goals and finished tied for second in the SEC in three-point percentage (.442). He also led Vanderbilt in free throw percentage (.875) and was third in minutes per game (28.9 mpg.), while earning the team’s Leadership Award, Coaches’ Award, Captains Awards and Most Improved Player honors.
Cage played in Germany (TBB Trier), France (JSF Nanterre) and Spain (Caceres and La Laguna) for four seasons after graduating with an undergraduate degree in economics in May of 2007.
Cage’s high school career included a 3A state championship as a senior and McDonald’s All-America nomination. He averaged 18.8 points, six rebounds and five assists to led the team to a 22-2 record and become the first player from Bishop Chatard to be selected to play for the Indiana High School All-Stars in the annual matchup with the Kentucky High School All-Stars. As a senior, he was named Associated Press all-state, Indianapolis Star first team all-state, Hoosier Basketball Magazine first team all-state, Indianapolis Star Player of the Year, Star North Player of the Year, all-city first team and Class 3A State Finals MVP.
Cage married his long-time girlfriend from Indianapolis, Ind., Anna Pizzi in August of 2008.
