4/16/1998
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A member of the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team will represent the Big East Conference and the United States as a Big East/Nike All-Star May 28-June 7 in a six-game competitive tour of Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Alecia Balich (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala), a starting forward for the Panthers this past season, is one of 12 Big East players who will comprise the team. This summer marks the ninth time the Big East has sent a women's team abroad. Led by Miami head coach Ferne Labati, the All-Stars' schedule is highlighted by contests against USK Prague, which is considered one of the top teams in the Czech Republic, and the Austrian National team.
Prior to departure, Balich will attend a pre-tour training camp at Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J.
Balich finished the season as Pittsburgh's leading scorer, averaging 8.5 points per game. Additionally, she shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range (40-for-99), which ranked first on the team. Throughout the season, Balich was consistently ranked among the top 3-point shooter in the Big East.
