Women's Tennis Falls To 1-1

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers fell to the Duquesne Dukes, 7-2, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, before traveling to Penn State on Friday to participate in a weekend tournament.
Tuesday's dual match with Duquesne was closer than the final indicated. Sophomore Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) lost a competitive match to Krista Kondrath, 7-5, 6-4, in the first seeded singles match. Freshman Nikki Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) defeated Monica Furniss, 6-4, 7-6(5), and Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) beat Carrie Nygard, 6-3, 6-4, in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Freshman Brooke Yablonski (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) lost a heart breaker to Yanelle Valentin, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 as Pittsburgh ended singles competition with Duquesne leading 4-2.
Austin and junior Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) lost to Krista Kondrath and Lori Zingone, 8-4, in the first doubles match which clinched the match for the Dukes. The Panthers, however, continued to fight hard as Borza and Jafarian lost a tough match to Nygard and Valentin, 8-6 and Yablonski and Glorioso fell to Furniss and Jessica Marotta, 7-6(9), in the second and third spots, respectively. Pittsburgh now has a record of 1-1 as Duquesne remained unbeaten at 4-0.
The Panthers finished the week competing at Penn State where junior Leah Davis (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) had an impressive performance in the flight D singles bracket.
Davis started off by defeating Rutgers' Jennifer Porter, 7-5, 6-1 and advanced to the final round by beating Sara Gehlhause of Rutgers, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. In the finals, Davis fell to Penn State's Dana Reinitz, 6-3, 6-2.
Pittsburgh's next dual match will be on October 24, when they host Xavier at Washington's Landing.
