PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh women's soccer team hosted Miami (FL) in a Big East Conference interdivision matchup tonight, and were shut out by the Hurricanes, 2-0, at Pitt Stadium. Senior midfielder Nina Wathne scored both goals in the victory for Miami.
Wathne put the Hurricanes on the board at the 23:14 mark, after heading a pass from Sharon Williams over Panther keeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East). She followed that up with another goal in the second half off an assist from Allison McWhinney at 55:30, clinching the win for Miami.
The Hurricanes led the shot count, 19-11. Bashor recorded nine saves on the night, while Miami's Elizabeth Swinson had four. Sophomore midfielders Katrina Shibata (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair) and Andrea Graybill (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) led the Panthers with two shots apiece on goal.
Pittsburgh falls to 5-10-1 overall (1-4-1 Big East-Mid-Atlantic), while Miami improves to 10-6 (2-3 Big East-Northeast). The Panthers host Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 24. Game time is 1 p.m. at Sewickley Academy's Nichols Field.
Special Honors: In 1996, the University of Pittsburgh expanded it's athletic program to include women's soccer. Six members of that inaugural team were honored this evening in a special senior recognition ceremony, the first in the team's history. Seniors Megan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont), Heather Ferguson (Littleton, Colo./Columbine), Michele Johnson (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees), Kara Kunkle (New Holland, Pa./Ephrata), Vanessa Madison (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) and Mia Mora (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) were recognized by Head Coach Roland Sturk, family and friends as they played their last game at Pitt Stadium.
