PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team concluded its 1999 schedule with a 7-1 loss to fifth-ranked Penn State today at Nichols Field.
The Lady Lions took a quick 3-0 lead after just 11 minutes of play in the first half with goals by Megan Mills, Kelly Convey and Christie Welsh. Panther senior forward Mia Mora (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) scored Pittsburgh's only goal of the game at the 23:35 mark and sophomore Katrina Shibata (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair) picked up the assist. Convey then scored her second goal of the game at 38:24 to give the Lady Lions a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Penn State added three more goals by Courtney Lawson, Erin Cochran and Samantha Abelson in the second half for the final score.
The Lady Lions led the shot count, 23-6. Pittsburgh goalkeepers Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and Jen Huzvar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) split time in goal and had seven combined saves. Penn State's keeper Emily Oleksiuk earned the win while recording three saves in 55 minutes of play.
Pittsburgh concludes the 1999 season with an overall record of 5-12-1, 1-4-1 in Big East Conference play. Freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) finished as the Panthers' leading scorer with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. She also led the team with 26 shots and two game-winning goals.
Huzvar led the Pittsburgh keepers with a 1.89 goals-against average and compiled a record of 2-2-1, including three shutouts in five starts. Bashor recorded 75 saves on the year and had a 2.55 average.
