
Swimming And Diving Successful Over Weekend

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team claimed it's second Big East Conference victory of the season by defeating Notre Dame, 201-99, Nov. 13 at Trees Pool. The Panthers improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Pittsburgh claimed victories in all but three of the 16-events, including a sweep of the top three places in three events. Highlighting the afternoon for the Panthers was senior co-captain Brian Elko (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) who won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 51.58 and 1:51.45, respectively. Fellow senior and co-captain Scott Van Epps (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) placed first in the 100 breaststroke (58.77) in front of teammates Mike Pron (Belle Meade, N.J./Hillsborough) and Andy Cherep (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).
Senior Jerry Koller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), sophomore Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) and senior Tim Tallman (Lindenwold, N.J./Camden Catholic) swept the top three finishes in the 50 free. Sophomore Will Eden (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), senior Brendan Lupetin (Wexford, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and sophomore Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) combined to claim the top three places in the 200 individual medley.
Heath also finished first in the 100 butterfly (51.46), while senior Regan Drew (Shreveport, La./Arlington Martin) won both the 500 (4:38.74) and 1000 (9:32.86) free.
In diving, sophomore Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) placed first on the three-meter board with a score of 175.40.
Pittsburgh will compete in the Minnesota Invitational, Nov. 19-21.
The Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team traveled to Miami (Ohio) to compete in a quad-meet on Nov. 12, and returned home with two victories and one loss. The Panthers defeated Miami (175.50-122.50) and Kenyon (225-75), but fell to Big East Conference foe Notre Dame (198-102).
Senior Nicole Palombo (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks West) claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.72. Fellow senior Beth Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) won the 200 backstroke (2:03.89), while also placing second in the 100 back (58.51). Grube and Palombo also combined with senior Liz Perry (Beaufort, S.C./Ft. Lauderdale [Fla.]) and junior Katie Hunter (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) for a second place finish in the 400 medley relay.
Senior co-captain Jamie Tomazich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) dominated the diving competition and placed first on both the one- and three- meter boards with scores of 264.80 and 271.90, respectively.
Pittsburgh moves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big East. The Panthers will compete in the Minnesota Invitational held Nov. 19-21.
