PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's basketball team concluded its exhibition season with an 85-74 loss to the Premier All-Stars Nov. 17 at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pittsburgh led the contest through the initial 10 minutes of the first half and gained its largest lead of the game, 14-8, at the 15:40 mark. The Premier All-Stars tied the score at 20 and then took the lead, 27-25, at 9:15 on a 3-pointer from Lisa Cline. Premier increased the margin to as much as 10 with just over three minutes to go in the half, and went into intermission with a 45- 38 advantage.
The Panthers came out strong in the second half and brought the score within three, 47-44, on a jump shot from Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason). The two teams continued to battle and Pittsburgh captured its only lead of the half, 61-60, with nine minutes remaining. Premier's 12-3 run that followed, however, gave it a 72-64 advantage and the Panthers could not recover.
The Premier All-Stars had five players in double figures and shot 89 percent (8-of-9) from 3- point range and 60 percent (31-of-52) overall, to lead them to the victory. In contrast, the Panthers shot just 42 percent (28-of-66) overall and 25 percent (5-of-20) from behind the arc.
Pittsburgh received stellar play from two freshmen in Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) and Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Stewart, a 5- 8 guard, scored in a team-high 18 points, while Wittenmyer, a 6-2 forward, added 16 points of her own.
The Panthers concluded their exhibition season with a 1-1 record. They previously won a 64-50 decision over RTU Clondica Riga on Nov. 9. Pittsburgh will play its season-opener Nov. 21 at Fitzgerald Field House when it hosts Lafayette at 6 p.m.
