PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. over the weekend. The men's team finished second out of 12 schools with 677.50 points, behind host Minnesota (970). The women placed seventh out of 13 teams with 253 points.
The three-day event consisted of preliminaries (competed in short-course yards) and final heats that were conducted in short-course meters.
The Panther men grabbed two first-place finishes in relay competition. In the 200-meter freestyle relay sophomore Michael Demos(McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), sophomore Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo., Estes Park), senior Jerry Koller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and freshman Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) comprised a first-place time of 1:31.99, while the 200 medley relay team of senior Brian Elko (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), senior Andy Cherep (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), junior Patrick Shedlock (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), and Grube finished first in 1:42.66.
In individual competition, Elko claimed second place in the 100 backstroke (55:45), then added a first-place finish in the 200 back (2:00.69). Sophomore Will Eden (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) earned a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:25.73, while senior Scott VanEpps (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) also placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.74). Additionally, senior Mike Pron (Belle Meade, N.J./Hollsborough) had a top-three finish, placing third in the 200 breast in 2:18.31.
The Pittsburgh women were led by a number of top-three individual performances. Senior Nicole Palombo (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks West), a breaststroke specialist, placed third in the 100-meter competition with a time of 1:12.66, and fellow senior Beth Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) grabbed third place in the 100 back in 1:03.86. Grube also placed sixth in the 200 back (2:16.92). Rounding out the women's top performers was senior diver Jamie Tomazich (Wexford, Pa./North Alleghany), who earned the highest spot of any Pittsburgh diver with a third-place finish on the three-meter board (488.10 points).
Both the men's and women's teams have the week off from competition. Select Panthers return to action Dec. 2-4, when they compete in the U.S. Open in San Antonio, Texas.
