Brooke Stewart Leads Pittsburgh In 71-60 Win Over Ohio

PITTSBURGH -Freshman guard Brooke Stewart netted 16 points as the Pittsburgh Panthers women's basketball team won a 71-60 decision over visiting Ohio tonight at Fitzgerald Field House. The victory improves the Panthers' record to 4-1 overall.
Ohio pulled the score within four (48-44) at the 8:47 mark of the second half. But Pittsburgh responded with a 21-7 run, fueled by Celeste Barkley's (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) 10 points and Stewart's (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) six, to take a decisive 66-48 lead with 4:32 remaining.
Ohio took the first lead of the game, 2-0, off the contest's initial basket, but was able to take the lead only one more time in the contest, 10-7, at the 13:04 mark. Pittsburgh scored 10 unanswered points over the next seven minutes for a 17-10 advantage at 6:37. The Bobcats cut their deficit to three at 1:13, but the Panthers held on to go into intermission ahead, 26-21.
Stewart had a game-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers. Barkley also had a stellar game with her season-high 12 points, while adding a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) contributed 11 points and six rebounds of her own.
The Panthers take to the road for their next two contests. They begin Big East Conference play with a Dec. 8 contest at Rutgers and travel to Hampton for a non-conference matchup Dec. 11.
