Women's Tennis Concludes 1998-1999 Season

PITTSBURGH - The Panther women's tennis team concluded the 1998-99 season this past week, dropping two of three contests while competing at the Big East Championships in Miami. They defeated Villanova, 4-2, and suffered 4-0 and 4-1 losses to Seton Hall and Providence, respectively, to finish 11th at the conference championships. Pittsburgh finished the season with an overall record of 14-12, marking their sixth consecutive winning season.
Senior Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) concluded her career at Pittsburgh with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win over Villanova's Darne in the second singles slot to clinch the match victory for the Panthers. Shalbrack added another win on the day when she combined with Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) to defeat Julie Bonner and Julie Darne, 8-5, in the first doubles spot.
In the third doubles spot, Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) also recorded a victory for the Panthers with an 8-4 win over Liz Farrell and Megan Lacroix. Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manhiem Township) and Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) lost an 8-3 decision against Ashley Young and Colleen Obsitnik.
In singles competition, Jafarian won a 6-2, 6-0 win in the fourth slot, while Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) lost a 6-3, 6-2 match in the first-seed match and Carlson lost to a 7-6(5), 6-2 match in the third slot. Warden added another victory on the day with a 6-0, 7-6(4) win against Farrell in the fifth spot.
Shalbrack finished her Panther career with 113 combined singles and doubles wins placing her third all-time in school history. She is second all-time in the Panther record books with 60 career doubles victories and third all-time with 53 career singles victories.
